Minor Version Release of Shree-Lipi 7.3.0.7

This Month Modular Infotech are releasing new minor version of their Shree-Lipi - SL7.3.0.7.

In this new version release we have concentrated on new protection and Windows 8 32 bit operating system support.

In this version New Protection Lock (SOFDOG) is released. This lock is having compatibility from Windows XP to Windows 8 (both 32 bit as well as 64 bit) support. This is having better protection, long term support for operating systems on 32bit as well as 64 bit platform. In addition to this Modular is still continuing support for Weblock, MDOG lock and Pencd lock.

Since Tamil Government is standardizing using TACE-16 font layout in Government sector, Modular has released new Tamil font layout for composition as well as conversion to support in different applications like InDesign, Quark, Word, CorelDraw etc.. Modular is also giving 4 Tace-16 fonts along with the Tamil Vairam package. End user can install these fonts using Modular Font Manager by selecting Installation of other font layout option. Tamil Vanavil font is used in many govt. organizations and users face issues with higher applications and operating systems support. To overcome this difficulty Modular has released Vanavil font layout support for composition as well as conversion. End users should have Vanavil font installed in their system to use this option.

Since lots of Tamil users have requested us to give numerals in SL7 font layout similar to old version of Shree-Lipi, all Tamil fonts are modified and now end user will get bigger size numerals in all Tamil fonts.

To get cross compatibility between Shree-Lipi for Windows and Shree-Lipi for Mac operating systems, Modular has released Shreelipi_Ex font layout for composition for Punjabi language also. Support for all other languages is already available.

A new symbol font no 4808 containing Saint Namdeo Maharaj and Saint Tukdoji Maharaj symbols has been added.

For Bengali language new Akruti Bengali conversion facility has been added.

Modular has released Unicode support for conversion as well composition for Oriya. Please remember that Microsoft supports Oriya in Windows 7 and above.

For Devnagari language, STM-H font layout support is added. This requirement has come up from West Bengal region.

For Gujarat Rajkot region, Hari font conversion has been given to convert their old jobs to Shree-Lipi font layout in Text mode. In addition to that Gujarati fonts are tuned for AE matra.

Kannada fonts are tuned by considering the end user feedback received from Karnataka region.

Apart from the above, defects which are reported by the customers have been removed. We hope to give stronger and more bug-free version of Shree-Lipi to our end users.

Following interview of Maj Gen (Retd) NS Sapre, VSM was taken by Mr. Pradeep Satpute.

Question : Sir, you are an Ex-Army person. Our readers would like to hear about your career with Indian Military Services.

Answer : After completing SSC from Robert Money High School in Mumbai, I joined the National Defence Academy (NDA) in January 1966. After successful completion of training, I joined the Indian Military Academy, Dehra Dun for advanced training in January 1969 and was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in the Regiment of Artillery in Dec 1969.

During my Army career spanning 37 years, I attended a number of training courses and held a number of important assignments in the Army. I served as a Gun Position Officer (GPO) during the 1971 War in the Eastern Sector. I served as Brigade Major of an Infantry Brigade in Ladakh when the Siachen Battle was being planned. I was selected to go to Sweden for training on the 155 mm Bofors Gun in 1986. I commanded a Bofors Regiment in the Eastern Sector. I commanded a Bofors Brigade in the Western Sector during OPERATION VIJAY. On promotion, I was appointed as the Major General commanding the entire Artillery in the Eastern Sector in 2004. I was selected to be the first Major General-in-Charge of Administration of the newly raised South Western Command in 2005. I retired on 31 Aug 2006. In recognition of my distinguished service, I have been awarded the VISHISHT SEVA MEDAL by the President of India.

Question: You must have participated in War against either Pakistan or China. Could you please share any memorable incidence in this war?

Answer:1971 Operations. As a Gun Position Officer (GPO), I was responsible to deploy and fire guns of a battery of six guns. Since Oct 1971, we were deployed in the North East Frontier Agency (NEFA), now called Arunachal Pradesh to look after any aggression by the Chinese. My gun position was at an altitude of 14000 feet. Considering the High Altitude terrain, we had to depend on animals - our guns were carried on mules and we walked along with them. Suddenly in the last week of Nov 1971, we received orders to move to Agartala (Tripura) for induction into the erstwhile East Pakistan to provide gunfire support to our troops advancing towards Dhaka. It was a multi-modal move - animal transport up to the road, then by vehicles to Tripura and then crossing the border into East Pakistan. By the time we crossed the border, the war had commenced and we had to restrict our movements to the hours of darkness. since our leading forces  had advanced deep into East Pakistan, our initial movement was swift with little opposition. However, soon our leading troops came under heavy opposition from Pakistani Army. Being a GPO, I remained with the guns and we were around 5 to 7 km away from our leading troops who were in contact with the enemy. Our gun position used to come under heavy artillery fire of the enemy. We used to take protective measures like digging gun pits and bunkers for ourselves. The last five days of the war involved quick movement as the enemy's defences crumbled under assaults by our leading troops and heavy and accurate gunfire by our artillery. From the time we crossed the border there was no respite - either we were firing our guns or moving to deploy in the next gun position. Local population of East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) gave us a lot of help. By 18 Dec 1971, we received orders to move back.

Kargil War 1999.      I was commanding an Artillery Brigade which comprised four regiments of Bofors guns responsible for providing heavy artillery fire for any operations in Punjab or Rajasthan Sectors. By the third week of May 1999, it was clear that the intrusion in the Kargil Sector had to be cleared earliest and before the passes in the mountains of J & K close due to snow in Oct-nov. Since Kargil has a high altitude terrain, requirement of troops was heavy. A large quantum of troops and guns had to be inducted into Kargil Sector. At the same time, we had to take care that while we launch our offensive to dislodge the enemy's incursion in Kargil, we also ensure that we pressurize the enemy in the plains of Punjab and Rajasthan. I had to send one of my Bofors regiments to Kargil to operate under Northern Command to provide concentrated gunfire support to our troops fighting in Kargil. The rest of my brigade had to be staged forward in the Punjab and Rajasthan Sectors, poised to move across the border to support any offensive that our Army may be forced to launch in order to keep the enemy's troops occupied in order to prevent them from moving opposite the Kargil Sector. All movements were restricted to the hours of darkness. We remained poised and alert. The fall of Tiger Hill in Kargil was the turning point. Soon we were ordered to return to our permanent locations.
