We can activate Shree-Lipi icon by pressing Scroll lock key (Activation key) and then Indian language can be used in the Windows applications. Shree-Lipi supports various types of font layouts. It is very important to understand difference between these fonts and user must be careful to use correct font for the selected font layout. Brief description of all the font layouts is given below.

Monolingual Font (Shree font):
Monolingual fonts contain characters for a single Indian language script. These fonts are 8 bit fonts and have nomenclature like SHREE-DEV-0708, SHREE-DEV7-0708 (For Devnagari script and Shree-Lipi 6 and 7 font layout). These fonts are recommended for Desktop Publishing Applications because all the possible characters, conjuncts are available in Monolingual fonts. While using monolingual fonts, if you need to mix English text in the document, you have to change the font. These fonts can be used for Printing of books, Advertisements etc.

Bilingual Font (Suchi font):
Bilingual fonts contain characters for an Indian language script and English both. These fonts are 8 bit fonts and have nomenclature like SUCHI-DEV-0708 (For Devnagari script). These fonts are normally used for Documentation purpose if some English text has to be frequently mixed with Indian Language text. To start typing in English, you have to just switch OFF the scroll lock Key and start typing. It is not necessary to change the font.
These fonts are used for Application developments (database applications) and documentation.

Web Font:
Web fonts are like monolingual fonts containing characters for a single Indian language script. These fonts are 8 bit fonts and have nomenclature like Shree-Dev-0708W, Shree-Dev7-0708W (for Devnagari Script and Shree-Lipi 6 and 7 font layout). These are used to generate content in Indian language on the WEB and are specially tuned for this purpose. To type data using these fonts, you have to use keyboard handler of monolingual fonts.
These fonts can be used for office automations, Publishing documents, application development for internet based web application, static web pages.

ShreeLipi-Ex Font (SLX font):
It is often experienced that accommodating all the characters of an Indian language in 8 bit fonts is extremely difficult and the designer has to do lot of compromises. ShreeLipi-Ex or SLX fonts are specially developed to overcome these problems. These fonts are 16 bit fonts and have nomenclature like SHREE-DEVX-0708 (For Devnagari Script). These fonts can be used in Unicode compliant applications like Indesign CS2,3,4,5, MSWORD 2000 onward, CorelDraw 12 onward etc.. These fonts have large number of characters useful for getting akhand akshar and conjuncts in applications. While typing the text, because of akhand akshar, character breaking gets avoided. SLX fonts are most advantageous in Bengali, Assamese, Oriya, Telugu, Kannada, and Sanskrit languages. It is possible to get both English and Indian Language characters in one font. There is no need to change font while typing English text in between language text.
